The first memory Rob had was of Beth crying. They were in an alley in Harrisburg, hidden behind a trash bin. Neither of them knew how they’d gotten there; neither of them could remember anything before that alley. They only knew they belonged together.

Description

Robbie McAlister was hungry. He always seemed to be hungry these days. Mom and Ruby said it had to do with his turning thirteen and starting to grow up, but to Robbie it felt like going backward in time. The nearly constant pangs he felt reminded him of when he was little, living on the streets of Harrisburg scrounging food for himself and Beth, his little sister.
There had been plenty of food at his birthday party tonight; Ruby Jones had, as usual, made his favorite roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy. Rob’s two brothers and three sisters had, also as usual, jeered at his choice of spinach for the vegetable, but Mom had quelled that pretty quickly. And everyone enjoyed his signature cake, yellow with chocolate frosting.
